Before you rely on these numbers

  • This is an illustrative tool, not investment advice and not a recommendation to buy or sell any security or product.
  • Every figure is a projection built on the assumptions shown, which you can change. Actual returns vary and can be negative.
  • Returns are assumed to be steady year on year. Real markets are not, and a poor sequence of returns close to your goal changes the outcome even when the average does not.
  • Figures are before tax, exit loads and fund charges, and assume every contribution is made on time.
  • Nothing you type is sent anywhere. The calculation runs entirely in your browser and nothing is stored.

Why save for a holiday in advance?

Saving ahead lets you pay for a trip in full, without credit card interest or repayments waiting for you when you get back. Travel prices also tend to rise, so a trip that costs ₹2.5 lakhs today could cost noticeably more in a couple of years. Knowing the future cost tells you exactly how much to put aside each month.

How to use the holiday savings calculator

  1. Describe the trip. Enter what the trip costs today, including flights, stay and spending money, and the number of years until you go (1 to 20).
  2. Add your money today. Enter what you have already saved for the trip and how much you save toward it each month.
  3. Adjust the assumptions. Set the annual return you expect on your savings (3% to 14%) and how fast you expect travel prices to rise (6% to 14% a year).

You will see what the trip will cost when you go, how much of it your savings will cover, and, if you are short, the extra amount to save each month or how long it would take at your current pace.

How the holiday savings calculator works

The calculator works in three steps:

  1. Future cost of the trip. Today's cost is grown at your travel price rate until you go: future cost = cost today × (1 + price rise)ʸ, where y is the number of years.
  2. What your savings grow to. What you have already saved grows like a lump sum, and your monthly saving grows like a recurring deposit or SIP, added at the start of each month. The monthly rate is the one that compounds to your annual return: (1 + annual return)^(1/12) − 1.
  3. The gap. If your savings fall short of the future cost, the gap is turned into the extra amount to save each month to close it.

Worked example: A trip costs ₹2.5 lakhs today and you plan to go in 2 years, with travel prices rising 12% a year, so it will cost about ₹3.14 lakhs by then. You have saved ₹10,000 and save ₹5,000 a month, earning 6% a year. You will put in ₹1.3 lakhs, which grows to about ₹1.39 lakhs, covering 44% of the cost. The gap of about ₹1.75 lakhs could be closed by saving ₹6,850 more a month. At your current pace, you could take the trip in 8 years instead.

Holiday Savings Calculator FAQs

Holiday Savings Calculator

Everything the trip will cost at today's prices: flights or train fares, hotels, visas, travel insurance, local transport, food, activities and some spending money. If you're travelling as a family or group, enter the total for everyone whose costs you're covering.

Travel costs such as airfares and hotel rates can rise faster than general prices, especially for popular destinations and peak seasons. The default of 12% a year leans to the safe side. For a flexible domestic trip, 6% to 8% may be enough; for international travel, stay at 12% or go higher.

Enter today's cost in rupees at the current exchange rate. Foreign prices rise over time, and the rupee has tended to weaken against major currencies over long periods, which makes the same trip cost more in rupees. A higher price-rise setting covers both.

Most holidays are only a year or two away, which is too short a time for equity, since it can fall sharply just before you need the money. Safer options like recurring deposits (opens in new tab), FDs or liquid funds suit short goals better, which is why the default return is 6%. Only use a higher rate if your trip is several years away.

Our FD calculator shows what a deposit earns over a short term

Saving first means you don't pay interest, and you won't carry repayments after you're back. Paying with a credit card that you can't clear in full, or a travel loan, adds interest to the cost of the trip. Even 'no-cost EMI (opens in new tab)' offers can include processing fees or a lost discount, so check the total you'll pay.

Our loan calculator shows what borrowing the same amount would cost

You can travel a little later, choose a shorter or less expensive trip, go in the off-season, or book early to lock in lower prices. The calculator shows how long it would take if you keep saving as you are, and you can move the sliders to find a plan that works.

Yes. Run the calculator once for each trip, using only the savings meant for that trip each time, so the same money isn't counted twice.

No. It assumes you save the same amount every month. If you can save more over time, you can start with a smaller extra amount than the one shown.

Mostly because of how the monthly rate is worked out. Many calculators divide the annual return by 12, which compounds to slightly more than the rate you chose. This calculator uses a monthly rate that compounds to exactly the annual return you choose, the same way returns are usually quoted.

No. Results are shown before tax. Interest on deposits and gains on funds may be taxed, depending on the type of investment and your income, so aim a little higher if you need the full amount in hand.

No. Nothing you enter in this holiday savings calculator is stored.
